Children's Books and the CPSIA

This is a follow up on our other posts about the CPSIA. Effective February 10, 2009 the CPSIA law came into effect and there have been many blog posts and news articles written about it. We have found the posts at Overlawyered to be very imformative. You can also find information about the CPSIA at their website.

On February 10, 2009 we have added a Shipping Restriction for our Childrens Books, as follows: Effective February 10, 2009 Children's Books will no longer be shipped to the USA. This change is being made because of the United States Consumer Product Safety Act (CPSIA). Countries and Territories included in the USA Region:

* American Samoa
* Guam
* Marshall Islands
* Micronesia, Federated States of
* Northern Mariana Islands
* Palau
* Puerto Rico
* United States of America
* United States Outlying Minor Islands
* Virgin Islands (US)

We have added "SHIPPING NOT AVAILABLE TO THE USA" to the description of the books effected by this shipping restriction.

January 2009 Book Club Selection

This evening we had our February book club meeting. We discussed our January selection which was Two Little Girls in Blue by Mary Higgins Clark .

If you have not read this book it is about the kidnapping of three-year-old twins from their home in Connecticut. They are being held for a 8 million dollars. The parents were not rich and did not have this kind of money, but the company that the husband worked for met and decided to pay the ransom for them. The ransom was paid and the children were suppose to be returned safely to the family, as per the Pied Piper, who was the person who had planned this kidnapping. But, unknown to him, one of the kidnappers had other plans and kept one of the twins, for herself. You have to wait until almost the very end to find out who the Pied Piper is and it was not the person I thought it was going to be.

During the story the author writes about how the twins were communicating with each other and how they felt each other's pain. Do you believe that twins can communicate with each other? Do they feel each other's pain? This is one of the themes in this book and I found it quite interesting that if one twin was ill the other twin was also ill.

Mary Higgins Clark is known as the Queen of Suspense and she has written many books. Be sure to visit her website where you will find a list of the books she has written and a brief biography.

Follow-up on Childrens Books and CPSIA

This is a follow-up on our last post about the CPSIA and childrens books. Apparently the CPSIA has granted a one year stay of testing and certification requirements for certain Products. Read the announcement about this here. Also there is an article in The Houston Chronicle about this.

There is still no word on an Exemption for books. You can read more about this here.

Childrens Books and CPSIA (The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act)

I just finished answering an inquiry from a customer on The Beginners Bible New Testament: Timeless Children's Stories.

While looking through this book I remembered that effective February 10, 2009 any product (including books) intended for children 12 years or under must be tested and meet the new lead limits as set out in The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA). and if not will no longer be allowed to be imported or sold in the United States. This new Law requires lead testing for all products for children 12 years or under and this includes books. Also, this law is retroactive, which means it covers any and all chlidren books, no matter when published.

If you have not heard of this new law, you are not alone, many people are unaware of it. To learn more about The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) click here.

How does this affect us at Trylinski Books?. It basically means that we may no longer be able to sell to customers in the United States any books intended for children 12 years or under.

According to a recent News Release from the CPSC ..."The new safety law does not require resellers to test childrens products in inventory for compliance with the lead limit before they are sold. However, resellers cannot sell childrens products that exceed the lead limit and therefore should avoid products that are likely to have lead content, unless they have testing or other information to indicate the products being sold have less than the new limit. Those resellers that do sell products in violation of the new limits could face civil and/or criminal penalties."

The above News Release points out that we can resell products (books) without having them tested, but if it is found that the product (books) have lead limits that exceed the new limits set out in the CPSIA, then we could face civil and/or criminal penalties.

Here at Trylinski Books, we are waiting to see if Books will be made exempt from the CPSIA, but if they are not, then we will have to decide if we are going to remove all our books intended for children under 12 years of age OR somehow identify which books will or will not be available for shipment to the United States.

What have you been reading?

I have always found it hard to get a lot of books read since I started bookselling. It seems I am always working and I was not taking any time for actually "reading". Then in November one of the ladies in town approached me and asked me if I would like to join a Book Club.

So in November, 2008 the Pangman Book Club was started. The first book we read was Kitchen God's Wife by Amy Tan. It was a great read.

In December we read The Ukrainian Wedding by Larry Warwaruk. At our January Book Club meeting we discussed how the author slowly developed the different characters in the book, about the Ukrainian beliefs and old ways they brought with them from the Ukraine, about the relationships between the different families, and how strong the women had to be to survive during that time in Canada.

If you have not read this book, it takes place during the second world war in a small community in Manitoba, and tells of a time when people were in a transition from being European to becoming Canadian. I will not soon forget the many characters introduced in this story: Nelie and Danylo, whose wedding is taking place in July, Lena who has just finished Grade 10 correspondence school, Nick who is back from the war, his parents Panko and Paraska, Lena's sister Rose and her husband Yuri, and many others. The story begins with Lena going to buy a dress and shoes for Nellie and Danylo's wedding, the Ukrainian traditions prior to the wedding and the wedding celebration. How Marusia and Yuri ran off during the wedding to Dauphin and the murder of Marusia, and finally the trial of the murderer.

The Ukrainian Wedding was published by Coteau Books of Regina, Saskatchean, in 1998. The author, Larry Warwaruk was born in Regina, Saskatchewan. He has also written: Red Finns of the Coteau, Rope of Time, Sundog Highway: Writing from Saskatchean , Andrei and the Snow Walker , as well as a number of short stories published in Grain, NeWest Reviews and elsewhere.

Our selection for January is Little Girls in Blue by Mary Higgins Clark.

How to Purchase a Book on our Website and Other News!!

Recently, we having been receiving inquiries from customers asking "how do we purchase a book on your website?".

To purchase a book on our website, first search by Author, Title, ISBN or Keyword to find the book that you are looking for. Once you have found that book, click on the Title name and a new screen with come up showing you an image of the book and description. If this is the book that you would like to order, then click on "Add to Basket". After you have done that click on "View Basket"

Now, you will be taken to our checkout, where you can decide if you want to pay by PayPal (Visa, Mastercard, Discover or American Express) or if you want to pay by cheque/check or international money order.

If you want to use our checkout and pay by PayPal or credit card, then Select your Country and also your shipping preference (surface or air) and then click on "Checkout". When you click on Checkout, a new window or tab should open taking you to PayPal's secure server where you can see our name "Trylinski Books" , the book title and the Total with Shipping at the top of the screen. If you have a PayPal account then sign in using your email and password. If you are not a PayPal member, then enter your billing information, etc. Remember, you do not need to be a member of PayPal to pay with a credit card.

If you prefer to pay by cheque/check or International Money Order, then add the book you would like to the basket (as explained above), and then complete the form entitled "Order by Cheque or Money Order". After we receive your order we will send you an email with payment instructions. It would be helpful if you could indicate whether you want surface or air mail shipping in the Additional Information part of this form.

Other News!!!

We are now set up to accept Visa and Mastercard payments, so if you do not wish to provide your credit card information on the internet, fill out the "Order by Cheque or Money Order" form and indicate in the "additional information" section that you wish to pay by Visa or Mastercard and then give us a call and provide us with your credit card information. You can find our contact information under the Contact Us tab at the top of the screen.

PayPal Website Problems Resolved

Further to our post of July 16, 2008, we can now report that the Invoicing problem we were having with PayPal has now been resolved. We can now access our invoice templates as well as create new ones.

We would remind our customers that if you have ordered a book from us and have not gone through checkout, please follow the payment instructions we provide in our email. If you have not received an email from us within 24 hours of your order, please be sure to contact us and/or check your SPAM folder as sometimes our emails are directed to SPAM by some email providers.

PayPal Website Problems - Again!!

It has been a very frustrating week here at Trylinski Books. We rely on PayPal quite a bit, as many other small internet businesses do, and this week we have been unable to send custom invoices to our customers. Our PayPal Invoice templates will not load and we are unable to create new invoices on PayPal.

If you order a book from us and go through our check-out, your payments are being received.

If you have ordered one of our books from one of the other sites we list on or have not gone through our check-out, we will be sending you an email with your order details and our payment instructions. Please follow the instructions in our email to pay for your order.

Let's hope that PayPal can get this problem fixed soon!!

A Review of our Shipping Rates

This past week has been a week of emails and questions about our shipping rates. So, I thought I would post this information here this week, just as a review.

When you are looking to purchase a book from us, you can review our shipping rates by clicking on the Shipping Tab at the top of the page. We have tried to make it as easy as possible for our customers to have all the information they require prior to purchasing their book, so that there are no surprises when you reach check out.

If you have any questions or concerns about the shipping fee for a particular book that you are looking to purchase, please email us prior to ordering the book so that we can address any and all of your concerns.

Shipping and Handling Fees

Please remember to review your shipping address prior to sending your order, to ensure all is correct. We would also ask that, if possible, you provide a telephone number with your order, as this tends to help orders get through customs quicker.

All our books are packed as follows:

Hardcover books: wrapped in brown kraft paper, shrink wrapped and then covered with bubble wrap. Depending the size and weight of the book, either placed in a bubble envelope or a cardboard box.
Softcover books: wrapped in brown kraft paper, backed with a piece of cardboard, shrink wrapped and then placed in a bubble envelope.

Canada

Surface - USD $7.50 (Estimated delivery time: up to 9 business days to most destinations in Canada, except YT or NU, which take about 17 business days according to Canada Post)
Extra Item - USD $2.00
Air Mail - USD $15.00 first item - Extra Item - USD $3.00

USA

Surface - USD $7.50 (Estimated delivery time: about 8 to 15 business days - EXCEPT for Alaska - 16 business days and Hawaii - 29 business days).
Extra Item - Surface - USD $2.00
Air Mail - USD $15.00 first item - Extra Item - USD $4.00

Shipping rates quoted are for books weighing up to 1kg(2.2lbs). For books over 1kg (2.2lbs) and multi-volume sets, we may contact you to let you know extra shipping is required.

April has been a very busy month for us here at Trylinski Books. We have signed up with more book listing sites and so have been busy uploading our books to these new sites.

You can now find our entire inventory on the following websites: Antiqbooks, Biblio, Biblion, Choosebooks, and the World Book Market.

If for any reason you are not comfortable paying for a book through PayPal and want to pay by credit card, all our books are on Biblio and Choosebooks and they can process credit card payments for us.

As well you can find a selection of our books on Abebooks, Alibris, and Amazon .ca.

Abebooks has been in the news this past month. They have changed their fee structure for sellers, and we are now paying a commission to Abebooks on the shipping rates we charge on their website. So, if you buy one of our books on Abebooks, you will notice that we have increased our shipping rates on that site to help offset these extra charges.

If you have stopped by and we do not have what you are looking for, we recommend you try Biblio, Choosebooks, Antiqbook, or the World Book Market. There are many independent booksellers from all over the world on these sites who may have the books you are looking for.
